Did you know that the red panda is the original panda? They were the only animals known by that name for more then 40 years, before the giant panda was formally described and named. Despite some similarities they are not closely related, red pandas are closer to racoons, weasels and skunks while the giant panda is a bear. They are small, tree-dwelling mammals native to the eastern Himalayas and southern China. They primarily eat bamboo but also consume fruits and insects. Solitary and nocturnal, they live in forested mountains and are skilled climbers.
Endangered, with fewer than 10,000 left in the wild, red pandas face threats from deforestation and poaching. Conservation programs and protected areas aim to safeguard their declining populations.
