Megantereon was a saber-toothed cat that roamed Africa, Eurasia, and possibly North America from about 4.5 million to 500,000 years ago. Roughly jaguar-sized, it had long, sharp canine teeth for hunting large prey like deer and young rhinos. A solitary ambush predator, it likely climbed trees like modern leopards. Climate change, turning forests into grasslands, led to its extinction. It may have been an ancestor to Smilodon. Fossils suggest it even hunted early hominids.
