The Mountain Pygmy Possum is a tiny, mouse-sized marsupial found only in the alpine regions of southern Australia, like Victoria and New South Wales. Weighing about 45 grams, it has grey-brown fur, a long prehensile tail, and lives in rocky boulder fields at high elevations. These nocturnal possums eat Bogong moths, fruits, and seeds, and are the only Australian mammal to hibernate, sleeping up to seven months under snow. Critically endangered with fewer than 2,000 left, they face threats from habitat loss, bush fires, climate change, and declining moth populations.
