Description
The Waterlily flower emerges from muddy water to bloom, gracefully. It can symbolise resilience, beauty and transformation. This waterlily was drawn from a white flower but the colour was inspired by a pink one (see photographs).
Description: This bag is unique. The bag front features a waterlily in metallic paints, embroidered with quilting, on a navy background. The back has stylised plants and butterflies while the lining is blue with light blue patterns - commercial cotton fabrics. There is an internal pocket with zipper closure.
Technique: Trace then draw the plants from a photograph, then copy to navy fabric. Paint using acrylic fabric paint, leaving outlines between areas. Iron once dry, to set the paint. Create a quilt sandwich (top, wadding, lining). Free-motion quilt around the flower, bud and leaves, in the outlines, using a multicoloured thread. Quilt the water using the multicoloured thread and free-motion to represent the flow of water. Quilt the sky with navy thread, in straight lines. Trim and make in to a bag, quilting the back sandwich and inserting a pocket, with a decorative embroidery pattern on the handles.
Bag Details: The bag is all cotton, except the zipper and is 28 cm high x 30.5 cm wide on the outside. The zipper is 18 cm long, while the pocket is 15.5 cm high x 23 cm wide. The handles are 40 cm long and 4 cm wide. Cold wash is recommended, and dry in the shade.
