“The Country” cooker is so named because Australia is a big country, the spoon is made of a tree which connects us to country, and the idea that in the country there are often fabulous, hearty, nourishing meals made by lovely cousins with big wooden cooking spoons like this one. So its name is layered you see. Deep.
The Country cooker is a long cooking spoon at approximately 34cm (depending on the handle finial/finish chosen) with a wide bowl perfect for cooking stews, rice and curry dishes.
The Country cooker is carved using a bandsaw to rough out the shape, and then various chisels and knives to refine the shape until it resembles this spoon! This spoon is lovely with a knife finish, and is then lightly sanded and burnished smooth and sealed with my spoon butter, a mix of coconut oil and beeswax, and then buffed to a shine afterwards.
You have a few choices with the timber type and handle finishes on The Country, some of which are shown in the images! Current timber stock is Silky Oak, White Beech, Camphor Laurel and Red Cedar. Finish types include natural finish, rustic painted handle, or a carved bird, heart, or orb finial on the end.
Care for your spoons: Handwash with warm water and detergent when needed. Never place in the dishwasher. Dishwasher = sadness :( From time to time you can re-sand with a light grade sandpaper (for example 320 grit), and re-oil using a food safe and non-oxidising oil (for example food grade mineral oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, or my spoon butter!).
