Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
Well, I guess it began in 2018 when my children gifted me a beginner’s class in wheel throwing. I have loved clay and its creative potential since and was instantly hooked and the obsession had begun.
'As every potter will tell you those first few pots were not good! They were lopsided, uneven, and sometimes even collapsed under their own weight.'
But each piece was a step in my journey, a lesson learned, and a new technique explored. For me working with clay is therapeutic.
I love transforming raw lumps into functional pieces. Over time, I improved through classes, tutorials, and practice.
Looking back, I’m grateful for that Mother’s Day gift that sparked this journey. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful pursuits begin with a small gesture. And while my first pots might not have been perfect, they were the foundation of a passion that continues to grow.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
Nature is my greatest inspiration. I draw from its shapes, textures, colours, and patterns – from the vibrant hues of a sunset or the mesmerising patterns created by light dancing on the surface of water.
Pressing leaves from my garden into clay also creates interesting textures and patterns. All these elements are evident in many of my pieces.
Where did you learn your craft?
I’m fortunate enough to live close to the amazing Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy. It was here that my pottery journey began. The centre regularly holds Master Classes providing endless opportunities to learn and grow as a potter.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
I think it’s important because it captures human creativity and expression in a unique way.
'The beauty of handmade pottery for example lies in its imperfections, embracing uniqueness and individuality.'
Each piece celebrates the human touch making it special in ways that mass produced items simply can’t replicate. Handmade artistry brings authenticity, personal connection and a touch of the artist’s heart and soul into everyday objects.
Anita is a much loved member of the Madeit Collective, posting regularly in our Facebook Group ~ The Home of Australian Handmade ~ and sharing her new creations as they are released. If you haven't connected with Anita Ceramica already, make sure you join our FB Group and say hi!
