Introducing Florence from Joli Orchid Pots. Where every item is handmade!! From her home in Brisbane, Queensland, she makes ceramic pots, primarily designed for orchids.
Find out why Florence started creating and why she is so passionate about the value of handmade.
Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I look at my own orchids and their growing habits to design my pots. Some will like more drainage and air flow than others. I like rustic and natural forms, incorporating some botanical elements on occasion. I make every pot by hand, no machines involved, using some forms that I created from clay for my cone shapes.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
I have started pottery as I could not find beautiful pots not made of plastic or inadequate for orchids. They had to be part of the aesthetic of your home to enhance the display of orchids and improve their health.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
I look into nature for inspiration, foliage attracts me the most. Looking at a tree bark or seed pods gives me lots of ideas.
Where did you learn your craft?
I am a graphic designer by trade, creativity has always been part of my life. For the pottery, I am self-taught like a few other creative endeavors.

Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
Handmade is important for the soul, to slow down and embrace the natural world around us.
The accumulation of so much 'stuff' horrifies me, particularly plastics.
I have become quite impartial to remove as much plastic out of my life as possible, hence the ceramic pots for my orchid collection and others people who would also enjoy to display their plant babies in a beautiful home.
