This bird was hand-carved in huon pine. After carving and sanding I then scorched the bird to accentuate the timber's grain. This Japanese technique - shou sugi ban - burns off the weaker grain thereby accentuating the stronger grain, creating a distinctive look and texture. It's a technique that works really well with huon pine because of the variation within the grain.
