OneWildBird
My name is Erin and I live in Myrtleford, North East Victoria. As a wildlife carer for over 30 years I have spent much of my time in the bush collecting gum nuts, leaves and branches to support the birds and animals in my care. This close and constant connection with the natural environment has profoundly influenced my creative practice.
Nature is, in itself, a work of art. The structure of a feather, the architecture of a nest, the detailed etching found in an ancient tree. My work does not attempt to copy these forms, but rather to capture a sense of their uniquness and presence. Botanical contact printing or 'ecoprinting' provides an ideal process to achieve this goal.
What is ecoprinting? A way of transferring the colour and outline of leaves onto fabric. This is a natural process- the fabric is prepared in natural minerals to ensure the end print is colorfast. Botanical materials-plants, leaves, flowers are arranged on the fabric, rolled up into a bundle then steamed or boiled. During the heating process the pigments or the plant are transferred to the fabric. The fabrics must be natural - linen, silk, wool, bamboo, cotton.
Due to the endless natural variables - the species, season, age, location and the health of each plant - every ecoprint is unique and impossible to replicate, mirroring natures quiet design and diversity.
