Fibre has always fascinated Nina.
Her father ran a cotton textile and yarn mill in Madurai, a small, sleepy town deep in southern India. Nina’s grandmother taught her how to use fibre in art when she was eight. She later went on to study textile design and the art of woven fabric in Mumbai.
Nina moved to Sydney 27 years ago and now lives on the Gold Coast as a textile artist. She works with locally sourced fibre, often processing raw fleeces. Natural dyes are of particular interest to her with their surprising colour palette.
For some woven scarves, Nina has used dyes from fallen leaves, flowers, vegetable and fruit peels, seeds, and garden prunings. All materials transitioned from the dye pot to the compost. She uses her own hand spun yarns and hand looms for weaving with her work focusing on sustainability.
Ranking first in textile design in 1987, Nina has exhibited in India, Canada, and Australia, including being a finalist in the 2021 Australian Fibre Arts Awards and exhibiting the woven tapestry, ‘Shades of Paradise’, at the Gold Coast Triennial 2024 at Home of the Arts.
