Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I have been playing with clay for over 30 years, and over that time I've experimented with many techniques and methods. All of these experiences have led me to where I am today - living the dream!
I have a sweet little studio and create one of a kind pieces that are often quirky and fun and I love making homewares, knowing they will go into people's homes and be used and loved for years to come.
I throw on the wheel and hand build but my favourite thing is texture - I even make my own stamps, stencils and rollers to create interesting patterns and designs
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
I started in ceramics making little fairies, castles and dragons to sell at the local market on Tamborine Mountain. When I left and moved to NSW I realised I wanted to keep learning so I studied and ended up with an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics and a BA in Arts History/Communication.
I worked in arts administration helping artists further their careers and decided at the ripe age of 55, it was time to quit my day job and try to become a full-time artist.
In 8 years, I've never looked back. I once created 100 teapots for the Finders Keepers Designer Market and this has turned into a life long passion to create increasingly intricate teapots. I discovered Steampunk and have enjoyed incorporating this style into my ceramics.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
I teach regular classes and my students are enthusiastic and eager to try new things, I find this wonderfully inspiring as I get to play again and often revisit techniques I haven't touched since being a student myself.
Where did you learn your craft?
I learnt about ceramics from studying through TAFE and have attended many workshops over the years, from sculpture to firing kilns, throwing and glaze making. I've been fortunate to work alongside production potters and studio potters, and have learnt valuable lessons from them.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
Handmade artistry is unique, it carries the love, knowledge and creativity of the maker. Using and having art in our lives enriches our existence in a way mass produced soulless items can never offer.
Nicci is a much loved member of the Madeit Collective, posting regularly in our Facebook Group ~ The Handmade Marketplace of Australia ~ and sharing her new creations as they are released. If you haven't connected with PJ Pottery , make sure you join our FB Group and say hi !
