If there's one thing I love more than the colour schemes of yesteryear, it's reclaiming its glass! And this piece features not only reclaimed architectural glass (with a gorgeous textured pattern that was first seen in the early 20th century) it centers around a repurposed cut glass bowl bottom!! That's right - to create this beautiful suncatcher I had to first deconstruct a lovely piece from the 50's... but don't feel too bad about the destruction of a lovely little bowl, for sadly it had sat silently on a shelf for years without use, and now - well it beams light through it for everyone to see!!
This suncatcher measures on average around 14 cm across it's widest points, and has a leather hanger and is suitable for walls, window sills and sheltered eves. As you can see from the pictures, there is a difference in width between the glass types which creates a wonderful 3D effect, and the variety of textures shimmer to create mixed patterns on any flat surface near it when back-lit. The pattern was drawn by hand specifically around the cutglass centrepiece, and all work was completed by hand in my home studio in beautiful Port Stephens.
Fast Fact: did you know that the cut-glass featured in lots of depression ware and mid-century pieces (as well as modern drinking glassware) contains varying levels of lead in it? Yep - the higher the lead content, the more clarity the pieces have (and the softer the glass is to cut and sculpt). But don't worry - it won't do you any harm to drink or eat from it on occasion, but best you don't store your scotch in that lovely old decanter in the longterm...
