This handmade clay character has a soft, contemplative presence, inviting a sense of stillness and quiet narrative. Her head forms a small bowl, perfectly sized for a tiny candle, allowing a warm glow to gently animate her expression. When being made i dropped a couple of tiny hand rolled clay balls into her. She has a very delicate jingle when shaken.
She cradles two small turquoise birds in her hands, while another perches lightly upon her head, creating a tender sense of balance and connection. Her beak is finished in silver lustre, adding a subtle shimmer that catches the light and brings a delicate contrast to the surface.
Painted in white and layered with carefully applied black underglaze washes, the surface suggests hills, trees and drifting landscapes. Tiny painted birds move through these scenes, adding depth, rhythm and a feeling of distance.
Standing approximately 10cm tall, this piece has been fired three times in my kiln. The layered finishes enhance shadows and fine details while maintaining a gentle, painterly softness.
Entirely handmade and one of a kind, this piece is both a small light-holder and a quiet storyteller — celebrating care, balance and moments held close.
