A branch of ginkgo leaves adorns this very unique raku ceramic urn. This artwork was fashioned from a flat slab of clay using a hand building technique.
The Ginkgo Biloba tree is considered a living fossil having been on Earth for more than 200 million years. The tree is greatly revered and has served as a symbol of hope and peace. Six trees survived the nuclear blast of Hiroshima and still grow there to this day.
Western Raku is a very fast process inspired by a traditional Japanese technique. It involves heating the pot very quickly to 1000 degrees Celsius until it is glowing red then pulling it from the flames and placing it in a metal vessel (I use a rubbish bin) with shredded paper and sawdust which then burst into flame. With the new fire fully alight the lid is then put on. Black smoke is produced which colours the clay and the oxygen deprived atmosphere causes the glazes to change producing unpredictable and sometimes incredibly beautiful results. The whole process is brutal and any urn that survives is a miracle considering the stresses applied.
This vessel is suitable as an ash urn and is large enough for most adults or a large pet, or can be displayed as a statement piece in the home or office. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and has won first place at Art Exhibitions in Australia. There are more raku fired urns on my website WhitelilyUrn.com.au
