Introducing Lauren from Lauren Williams. Where every item is handmade!! From her home in Melbourne, Victoria, Lauren hand makes all of her gorgeous jewellery.
Find out why Lauren started creating and why she is so passionate about the value of handmade.
Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
All my jewellery is handmade using vintage kimono and Japanese cottons. I also incorporate Tasmanian Oak and Bamboo Ply into my work. Each piece of fabric is selected, hand cut and covered using cover buttons. They are then turned into wearable items.
My main focus is for my jewellery to be affordable and multi wear.
My favourite things to make are my double-sided earrings and kimono necklaces which can be worn three ways. Some of my brooches can also be worn as necklaces.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
I've always been a crafter but pursued it more seriously after high school. I completed an Associate Diploma of Visual Arts, majoring in photography. I diverted for a few years and studied to become a Horticulturalist, another passion of mine.
I still had the creative bug and started making jewellery with my neighbour at the time. Over the years my brand has evolved from card making, shrink plastic, hand poured resin and Japanese paper crafts to where I am today.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?`
My main inspiration comes from the fabric I use to create my jewellery. I also take a lot of inspiration from pottering in my garden.
Where did you learn your craft?
I am mostly self taught but have learned a lot of tips and tricks from online tutorials and jewellery making classes.
In-person classes are my absolute favourite as you can not only learn a new skill but also connect with other creatives.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
Handmade artistry is important to me as I love the uniqueness of it! I will never underestimate to love and care that goes into making handmade.
