I have been creating since I was young, finding comfort and joy in making a wide variety of things with my hands and regularly giving handmade gifts to friends and family. I put all my creativity into my classroom when was a teacher however anxiety meant I left that career. Feeling somewhat at a loss I turned to learning a variety of new skills from vegetable gardening to homemade sourdough starters and fermenting (my family was not too impressed by my insistence to put milk kefir in all my baking), and finally coming back to fibre crafts.
It wasn't until I was hospitalised in 2020 with both of my lungs full of clots that I realised perhaps I could bring joy to others outside my family with the things I make. I had to lay still for 3 days in the hospital so my partner brought me a blanket I had crocheted. That seems pretty normal to most I'm sure, however I had a variety of nurses and doctors visit me throughout my stay purely because word of my crochet blanket was spreading around the staff. I had people picking out their favourite colours or colour combinations and reminiscing about family members who also crochet. It was only a few months after I left the hospital that I created 'LizziJo - Hand-made to last'.
I began with mostly crochet and, to be honest, my first attempts at amigurumi left a lot to be desired, however I stuck with it and, while I am still improving and learning, I am much improved! Once I delved deeply into testing out yarns and finding my favourite to work with I couldn't stop there. I now spin my own yarn, weave on a variety of looms and knit as well.
My ultimate aim with my items is to invoke a child like wonder and joy for adults and children alike. I also like the idea of slow fashion with handwoven scarves and wraps and hope to be using some of my handspun yarns in my weaving soon too. I use quality yarns and fillings so that my creations last as long as reasonably expected and prefer natural fibres for a majority of my creations.
