FAQ
Why did I start Dig The Flow?
Dig the flow was born out of a love for self care and a shift in mindset that a period could be a sacred time to honour and treat yourself. In 2017 I was introduced to the world of cloth with my eldest child. After becoming enamoured with reusables and the zero waste movement, I also discovered cloth for myself. At the time I was also struggling to manage a rather severe form of PND/A, and experienced a (thankfully) short-term period of agoraphobia.
Knowing that there would be a pretty pad in my mailbox - made just for me and packaged with love, gave me the motivation to step outside and outside of myself. I began to embrace the shared human experience of menstruation, and the realisation that I deserved inner peace, love, care and comfort. In an essence, pads gave me the opportunity to heal, repair my relationship with myself and discover the multifaceted nature of periods. After becoming obsessed and obtaining a stash large enough to cloth 3 vaginas, I decided to share my love for cloth and embark on the self taught journey of a maker - and now, here we are.
What does "Dig the Flow" mean?
To be honest, the name is pretty self explanatory. Dig the flow means to embrace the flow i.e. your period. By using these special pads I hope you'll also find your period to be a rather positive (or more neutral) experience - physically, mentally and financially.
What makes a DTF product so special?
All of the items available in store are one of a kind, and handmade with love and intention. I source fabrics from private sales and independent australia artists, and have a keen eye for vibrant, colourful unique pieces that'll bring you joy.
What benefits do my items give?
1. My items are inherently eco-friendly, so it's pretty cool knowing that you are actively playing a part in reducing your footprint on our planet.
2. The main benefit of reusable cloth pads is being able to customise shape, length and absorbency to suit exactly your needs at any time during your flow. Typically a flow will start off quite heavy, and will lighten up over time. Whether you need a long, extra-wide "heavy" pad for overnight use, or a "moderate" pad for your average on-the-go kinda day, you'll guarantee to find it here at DTF.
3. Understandably, it may appear to be quite an outlay at first to invest in cloth pads. Know that your beauties will last for years with proper use and care. You'll also save yourself the inconvenience of the mad dash to the shops when you've unexpectedly run out!
4. Research has indicated that the chemicals used in disposables (which remain undisclosed to the public) can be readily absorbed by the skin into the bloodstream. Chemical burns and irritation is a very common reason as to why an alternative cloth product is sought after.
5. Mentally, embracing cloth and accepting your flow for what it is (despite all the programming we've become accustomed to), can be quite empowering. We have all been subject to the taboo surrounding periods and the need to have an open discussion about periods. Showing off your unique DTF items can be a nice icebreaker to someone who may also benefit from the use of cloth, and allow the opportunity for a bloody good chat about periods.
What are DTF pads made from and how does it work?
Fabric, thread and a whole lot of TLC
Each layer in a cloth pad has a very specific function and purpose.
1. Fabric touching the skin - soft, comfortable and allows fluid to pass through to the absorbent layer.
2. Absorbent core containing 1-3 layers of 400gsm bamboo fleece - moderate (1), heavy (2), super-heavy (3).
3. Water resistant softshell backer - prevents leaking through and provides grip to underwear.
How do I use them? All pads are worn "pretty side" up. Fold the wings of your pad around your underwear and snap the buttons together to secure in place. Change your pad every 2-4 hours, or whenever you feel most comfortable with.
How do I wash and care for my pads?
With 5yrs of cloth nappy experience under my belt, the absolute best way to wash your pads to keep them pristine and squeaky clean is to do a short prewash (45min-1hr long cycle, 40oC, 1/2 dose detergent), followed by a long main wash (2-3hrs, 40-60oC, full dose detergent for heavy soiling) with other smaller items. Remember that the actual agitation between items is what gets them clean, so be sure to not under or overload your machine! Dry and store however you like! Preferably on the line, in the shade, and kept in a special box/drawer wherever you see fit.
