Leslie

I create handcrafted jewellery, homewares and bespoke artful items using primarily reclaimed wood in my home studio on Whadjuk Noongar country in Perth WA. Each piece is unique with its design informed by the wood itself. The size and shape, grain direction, colour, texture, shading of the timber is thoughtfully considered. Every item is individually cut or carved, shaped, sanded and oiled or waxed by me using both traditional hand tools and some machinery.

I have always been happiest when working with my hands and being creative. Using traditional woodworking techniques is a natural match with my passion for sustainability and a love of nature. I love taking an offcut or scrap of wood and giving it new life by turning it into something useful or beautiful.

Much of the timber I use comes from discarded offcuts at my local women's shed, fallen limbs or even pieces of firewood I thought were just were too pretty to burn. I try to identify the type of wood so you will know what variety it is but sometimes it's just “Mystery Wood”.

Facing a journey through breast cancer last year, getting into the workshop was something that kept me grounded. I was told to expect to lose my hair but didn’t anticipate that it wouldn’t grow back (yet!). To cope with being bald, woodworking became part of my journey of healing. I was inspired by a small, beautiful scrap of sheoak to create a pair of dangly earrings. Wearing those earrings made me feel bold to be bald, not ashamed. The process of creating them was so empowering. Then came a pair of camphor laurel, banksia, silky oak…more pairs than I would ever be able to wear myself. Now I bring them to you in my MadeIt shop.
