"Still Standing" – The Story Behind the Image
While on a trip to the doctor with my daughter, driving through the Gold Coast hinterland, a solitary tree caught my eye. It stood stark and lifeless against a backdrop of thriving green bushland and smaller trees—striking in its isolation and seemingly barren form. Something about it stayed with me.
On the way home, I remembered the spot and asked my daughter to slow down. With barely a moment to spare, I snapped a few quick photos through the car window.
That image has since become one of my most popular pieces—perhaps because it resonates with people on a deeper level. There’s something universal about its quiet resilience.
It wasn’t until I got home and viewed the image on my computer that I noticed something I hadn’t seen before: a few small green leaves clinging to the branches. Against all odds, this tree wasn’t dead—it was still alive.
I’m so grateful I was able to capture that moment. It reminds me that even in solitude, even when all seems lost, there can still be life, strength, and hope.
