Pandas, those beloved black and white bears, are native to the misty mountains of central China. Known for their adorable appearance, pandas have a unique diet that consists almost entirely of bamboo, which is not very nutritious. As a result, they spend up to 16 hours a day munching on this plant to meet their energy needs. These solitary animals live in mountainous regions and are skilled climbers.
Endangered, with about 1,800 left in the wild, pandas face threats from habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture. Conservation efforts, including protected reserves and breeding programs, have helped their numbers recover slightly, but they remain vulnerable.
