The story of Santa Clause grew gradually over hundred of years. It is said that he can be traced back to the 4th century St Nicholas who later merged with Father Christmas who in turn can be traced to the Norse God Odin celebrated in mid-winter. The 1800s are when the story crystallised and the image of Santa Claus we know today became standardised in the US by the early 1900s
